5 Baby Food Recipes For All

Fall produce is a great way to start babies on the right path of loving an array of seasonal fruits and vegetables. Try these simple, healthy, and flavorful baby food recipes to get your baby enjoying the scents and flavors of the season.

1. SWEET POTATO AND COCONUT PURÉE

Add a new twist to a Fall classic! Sweet potatoes get sweeter and creamier from the added coconut milk. The recipe makes about 14 full teaspoons.
Ingredients: 2 medium yams, washed 1/3 cup of coconut milk 1tsp. cinnamon

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Poke several holes in the sweet potatoes with a fork.
  3. Bake for an hour (you can put them on a piece of thin foil, so they don’t drip all over the oven).
  4. When sweet potatoes are cool to the touch, peel off the skin and scoop insides into a food processor with the remaining ingredients.
  5. Puree until smooth.
  6. Cool and serve.

2. Apple butter

This is such a simple and healthy recipe that you’ll be able to make even when you’re worn out from chasing Baby all day! The recipe makes about 1 ½ – 2 cups.
Ingredients: 2 apples (1 tart such as granny smith, 1 sweet such as golden delicious), peeled or unpeeled 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon agave nectar 1 tablespoon apple juice or water

Preparation

  1. Place all the ingredients in a sauce pan over low heat.
  2. Cook for 15 minutes, covered or until apples are soft and tender.
  3. Smash apples with a potato masher or the back of a spoon. You want the apple butter to be slightly chunky.
  4. Cool and serve.

3. Spiced carrot and rice purée

This recipe will give your baby a great head start towards loving the fresh flavors of wholesome foods! Makes six servings.
Ingredients: 1/2 cup short grain brown rice 1 1/2 cups water 2 medium carrots, chopped 1/2 teaspoon dried parsley 1/4 teaspoon cumin

Preparation

  1. In a small saucepan, combine rice and water.
  2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes.
  3. Add the carrots to the rice, cover and cook for an additional 15 minutes. You will still have some liquid in the rice, this will help with the pureeing.
  4. Transfer rice, carrot, parsley and cumin to a food processor, puree until smooth, adding additional water if necessary, and serve.

4. Apple walnut purée

Apples are one of those fruits that make the most delicious homemade baby food because when pureed, their texture is smooth and sweet — perfect for brand new eaters. This recipe makes around six servings.
Ingredients: 2 apples, cored and peeled (pink lady, fuji, or gala are all good choices) 1/4 cup walnuts, shelled & halved 1/8 teaspoons cinnamon

Preparation

  1. Place apples and walnuts in a steamer pot over boiling water.
  2. Cook for 7 minutes or until apples are fork tender.
  3. Place apples, walnuts, cinnamon and 3 tbsp of the water from the steamer pot in a food processor and puree for 3 minutes or until smooth.
  4. Cool and serve.

5. Roast pear and banana purée:

Roasting the pears and bananas intensifies the flavors and textures in this baby food! Makes six servings.
Ingredients: 2 bananas, cut into 2.5 cm inch pieces 2 pears, peeled and cut into wedges

Preparation

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Place the bananas and pears on a parchment paper.
  3. Roast for 25 minutes.
  4. Puree until smooth.
  5. Cool and serve.
